“Health is a state of mind, wellness is a state of well-being.”
Often when we are going through change in our lives, especially big change, change of seasons, or the holidays, we forget to take care of the most important person in the equation – ourselves. Ideally, each of us should take time for, and practice, self-care daily. However, you need to believe you are worth it first. Does taking care of yourself mean you are self-centered? Not at all. Being your own number-one draft pick, or loving yourself, is not about being self-absorbed or narcissistic. It is about having a high regard and respect for your own well-being and happiness and taking care of your own needs – not sacrificing your well-being for the sake of others.
Making self-care a priority can help us make healthy choices, but most of us are a better friend to others than we are to ourselves. Try making a conscious choice to direct your life intentionally when you can to create a super awesome lifestyle for yourself. I say “when you can” because sometimes we are caring for others, such as pets, our children, or other dependents that can make it challenging for us to make time for our own needs. Still, carving out time for yourself benefits you, and those around you. This is because when you hold yourself in high esteem, you are more likely to make choices that are healthy and nurture a positive state of well-being that not only benefits you but others around you.
While we cannot always ward off illness or unwanted change, by intentionally including self-care in our routine we can create a more positive mindset that focuses on good health, vitality, and a more optimistic sense of thinking which in turn creates a healthy state of well-being.
This could include:
*Talking to and about yourself with positive language
*Prioritizing yourself by making time for rest, relaxation, and slowing down
*Giving yourself a break from self-judgment
*Being true to yourself
*Setting healthy boundaries with others
*Forgiving yourself
Try this:
Initiate one activity each day to brighten your mindset. This could include yoga, meditation, reading an inspiring quote, exercise, writing in a journal, or a combination of many things that help you feel more relaxed and happier.
Choose me-time each week that helps you revitalize and nourish your body, mind, and soul. This could be a weekly chat with friends, reading, a hobby, or being outdoors, you decide.
Consider what you could add or subtract from your diet to help you look and feel better. Start and end each day with gratitude – write or say out loud three things you are grateful for each and every day.
When you are crafting your storyline for well-being, don’t let someone else write the chapters. Make conscious choices each day that align with your values and beliefs that help you create a sense of well-being that we all deserve.
