Top Cosmic Events for the Year Ahead

2022 is here! This year is about harmony, truth, and the balance of giving and receiving. We find ourselves needing more time to connect with Spirit and recover physically, mentally, and emotionally. How we take care of ourselves and each other rises in importance as we recognize even more that we’re in this together. The transits of 2022 show us how energy is moving and manifesting within and without. Being conscious of it means you can choose to work with it, and that makes all the difference. Let’s get into it with Astrology 2022: Top Cosmic Events for the Year Ahead.

Note: The following dates are calculated in Pacific Time.

Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius & Capricorn (January 14 – February 3)

Mercury turns retrograde about three times a year. This year, a fourth one begins at the end of the year. This first round of Mercury Retrograde is in Aquarius and Capricorn. In Aquarius, Mercury Retrograde attempts to get us to reconsider our ideas about progress. Are we really moving forward in a direction that’s better for everyone? And when it dips back into Capricorn, our rules, procedures, and even wisdom can crumble – as we discover they don’t work anymore, not in these shifting times.

Mercury Retrograde is always a chance to slow down, stop, and check-in. What story are you telling yourself about what you’re doing and what’s happening? There are other views, and they bring different opportunities. Some reconnect us with the past, and some step us into the future. We need both. If you’re willing to shift your perception, it’s a great time to reinvent, re-do, and revise almost anything.

Lunar Nodes enter Taurus and Scorpio (January 18)

When the lunar nodes enter Taurus and Scorpio on January 18, we shift to a new collective path of karma and dharma. The nodes have been in Gemini and Sagittarius since May 2020. During that time, we dealt with old karma around rigid beliefs, justice, and righteousness. We needed to open our minds and question the “truth.” Now, the North Node in Taurus calls us to calm down, trust our instincts, and build a new foundation. The South Node in Scorpio brings up old karmic patterns involving control, power dynamics, and manipulation. All that energy is dramatic and complicated – to find equilibrium, we need to let it go. The North Node in Taurus guides us to live with more stability, ease, and simplicity. Taurus is also self-sufficient. It’s time to put in the work for what’s truly worth it. The nodes will be in Taurus and Scorpio until July 2023, so get in the flow early to make the most of it.

Note: The lunar nodes are naturally retrograde and move backward – so they go from Gemini to Taurus, to Aries, etc.

Jupiter conjunct Neptune in Pisces (April 12)

Jupiter and Neptune come together every 12 or 13 years, but they haven’t met in Pisces since 1856. In Pisces, these planets bring an abundance of idealism, mysticism, and emotional and psychic sensitivity. On the light side, this can open the floodgates of love, compassion, and connection with something greater than ourselves. On the shadow side, we might feel isolated and alone, buy into false illusions, or turn to escapism. At its best, this rare connection can open us to what is usually unconscious, expanding our awareness and accelerating spiritual awakening. We may also more easily tune in to other intelligences and frequencies – the cosmic field will be open!

New Moon Partial Solar Eclipse in Taurus (April 30)

We’re in Taurus and Scorpio eclipse season. Eclipses bring leaps in consciousness, and this first eclipse of 2022 opens us to the mysteries of Taurus. That sounds fancy, but Taurus is quite practical. It’s about getting grounded inside and out. And it helps us know what we want and need and how to make it happen. Under this New Moon Eclipse, before you set new intentions (it’s always best to wait a couple of days after the eclipse), look at what makes you feel safe, secure, and lovable. Feel into what you really need and your natural talents. They’re aligned, and when you tap into them, the universe brings it all together.

Mercury Retrograde in Gemini & Taurus (May 10 – June 3)

Our second round of 2022 Mercury Retrograde begins in Gemini. Mercury Retrograde is always a good time to pick up old projects and look at old problems for new solutions. In Gemini, the mental/air energy is magnified, but its movement is unpredictable. Just like trains run off the tracks, so does train of thought. This can be a great thing when the old route isn’t getting to the desired destination. Mercury moves into Taurus for the final days of this Mercury Retrograde, taking us into the earth element. If you re-wired your mind, now you can feel the difference it makes in your body and physical world. If not, let your body show you where to make adjustments. When something hurts, it’s trying to give you a message. If you listen and feel into it, you’ll know how to love it.

Jupiter enters Aries (May 10 & December 20)

Jupiter spends about 1 year in each sign and will leave Pisces for Aries on May 10. Due to its retrograde, it will dip back into Pisces end of October until late December. On December 20, it will enter Aries again and stay there until May 2023. Jupiter is about growth and expansion of consciousness. It’s the part of us that wants to know more, do more, and be more. Aries is a sign of independence, initiative, and courage. It’s also about new beginnings and leads us into new experiences. Jupiter in Aries reveals a new path that’s better aligned with who we are and what we need. This transit reminds us that change happens when we’re brave enough to do something different. Someone has to go first, and when it’s your turn, know you have the strength and support to do it.

Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio (May 15)

The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse on May 15 brings a strong wave of transformational energy. In Scorpio, it helps us see what has changed, is changing now, and is ready for change. Emotional intensity can also reach a peak, so it’s important to release tension and express your feelings. With the Scorpio Moon opposing the Sun in Taurus, we need to better balance what’s “mine and yours.” We need to work together AND play our individual parts. Pluto, Neptune, and Mars form harmonizing aspects to this eclipse, adding power, vision, and passion. A square from Saturn might bring obstacles, but it just means we need to confirm our course of action. A bump in the road can help you redefine and recommit to your destination.

Uranus conjunct North Lunar Node in Taurus (July 31)

Destiny calls! When Uranus meets the North Lunar Node, it awakens us to the path of dharma. Uranus is a great liberator – it wants freedom and authenticity. The North Lunar Node represents our collective path of dharma or intention for evolutionary growth. In Taurus, we’re learning how to take a step back and restabilize. Our growth or progress as humanity depends on securing and sustaining basic needs like shelter, food, heat, and healthcare. We’ve long neglected what is truly needed for what we want. This doesn’t mean we should ignore our desires – Taurus loves to be comfortable. It does mean we need a new way of looking at wealth, abundance, and resources.

Taurus is an earth sign, and we call the Earth “our planet” – like we own it and can do whatever we want with it. That false sense of “freedom” is running out. Uranus conjunct the North Lunar Node in Taurus awakens a new alignment with nature. It’s time to reconnect with and strengthen our roots instead of demanding the “fruits.” Look at where and how you keep accumulating things when it’s already enough. This chapter of our destiny brings the blessing of simplicity. May we all learn how less can be more.

Mercury Retrograde in Libra & Virgo (September 9 – October 2)

Round three 2022 Mercury Retrograde begins in Libra. Mercury Retrograde is always a time to re-think and re-do. In Libra, it’s a great opportunity to get the balance right. The “balance” can be associated with almost anything in your life, but pay most attention to what you know is out of whack. Maybe it’s a relationship, a way you always look at things, or how well you listen. A little adjustment can make a big difference. Mercury enters Virgo for the last days of this retrograde, really getting into our heads. As a sign that likes to analyze things into reason and perfection, Virgo can be wound up tightly. If you catch yourself overthinking and finding endless problems, remember that unless it’s worth the work, let it go.

New Moon Partial Solar Eclipse in Scorpio (October 25)

Eclipses are flashes of awareness that accelerate our awakening. This New Moon Solar Eclipse is in Scorpio, the sign of intimacy, control, deep desire, mystery, and everything complicated. Scorpio confronts us with the truth of motivations – our own and those of others. The eclipse helps us see what’s real in our relationships and whether or not we still want it. In addition, the Moon aligns with Venus, magnifying the focus on relationships and values. This eclipse gets us naked, especially emotionally. Vulnerability is empowering because it opens the door to honesty. Work with this energy to transform yourself from the inside out. Just remember it will trigger reactivity, so be careful not to act impulsively. And anything you’ve become overly dependent upon has the potential to fall away. Remember that endings are always necessary. They usher us into beginnings.

Mars Retrograde in Gemini (October 30 – January 12, 2023)

Mars turns retrograde once every two years, the least frequent of any planet. As the planet of action, Mars prefers moving forward at a quick pace. It’s also a planet of desire and independence. Its retrograde periods can be extra uncomfortable because slowing down and looking within is so antithetical to its nature. If you’ve been pushing too hard, you might hit a wall. If you’ve been holding yourself back from what you truly want, your temper might rise. Mars Retrograde can bring up repressed anger, and in the sign of Gemini, can express through harsh communication. If you’re willing to reflect on what you’re really fighting, you can rewrite the story.

While it’s advised not to move forward with new endeavors during Mars Retrograde, jumping back into pursuits you’ve already started is worth the time and effort. It’s like running a race. While it continues, it takes your vitality. When it’s over, you reclaim your energy. This is a great time to end your “battles.” Once the retrograde is over, you can channel that energy into the next best chapter of your hero’s journey.

Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse in Taurus (November 8)

The final eclipse of the year is in Taurus, and it’s activated by Venus, Mercury, Uranus, Saturn, and the Lunar Nodes. Everything pushes for change, which can feel scary, exciting, or a combination of both! Old attachments are wearing thin – imagine them connected by strings about to fray. This Full Moon Lunar Eclipse is illuminating the past so we can better understand where we’ve been and why. Every action has a reaction, and that karmic pattern exposes itself if we’re looking. What we’ve believed to be solid and unchanging is always transforming. If you’re reading this, you’re outgrowing the past. Step out of where you’re small and stuck, and be steadfast in who you are.

Mercury Retrograde in Capricorn (December 29 – January 18, 2023)

The final and fourth round of 2022 Mercury Retrograde is in Capricorn. One of the best things to reclaim during this period is your sovereignty. If you’ve been letting someone else take charge of your life, reconsider how and where you’re giving away your power. Capricorn is about authority, responsibility, integrity, and respect. The Capricorn in each of us wants to accomplish something meaningful. People can help us by advising and guiding, and parents, teachers, and bosses tell us what to do, but no one knows you better than you. And no one else can do what you can do. During this retrograde, call on your inner captain, use your own judgment, and put your weight down on yourself.
