Goddess Guide: Breathwork for Beginners

-

I’m a super-fan when it comes to breathwork – I LOVE it! To me, breathwork is as close as you can get to plant medicine-based journey work without taking anything, and can be a wonderful alternative for people in recovery or who are sensitive to certain substances. It’s a simple and incredibly powerful practice that shifts your energy and clears blockages held in your body’s cellular memory. Breathwork healing offers you a nurturing experience and an opportunity to relax, restore, and replenish. This practice is easy, impactful, and can be life-changing, which is why I’m so excited to share my version of breathwork for beginners with you in this blog.

Breathwork is an ancient practice that dates back to the Vedic traditions and made its way into the yoga tradition of Pranayama. Prana, or Chi, is our life force energy, and the flow of prana through the body is directly linked to the flow of our breath. So, while you may often hear prana and breath being used interchangeably, they are not the same. Pranayama breathwork is practiced to stimulate and deepen the flow of the life force within you. Everything manifests on the energetic plane, including our illnesses, aches, pains, and blockages. When the energetic blocks are not dissolved, we begin feeling the effects of the mental and physical manifestations of these issues. In practicing breathwork, you can dissolve and heal these energetic blocks where they begin, resulting in overall healing across every plane.

One of the best ways of healing trauma is through the parasympathetic nervous system, which is actively engaged during breathwork. You practice connective breath, also called circular breath, since there’s no interruption between your inhalation and exhalation. If you do it properly, you WILL have an out of body experience! Increased oxygenation of the brain brings euphoria and a calm state. First, you fill the belly, then fill the diaphragm, then fill the heart space. Don’t be afraid to have a full belly or to make noises. Let go. By the way, this pattern of breathing is not unfamiliar to us – babies breathe this way naturally, which is probably why they’re happier than adults! You can do breathwork when you feel anxious, stressed, or are preparing for a ritual or ceremony. Breathwork can also be a wonderful practice before bed, as it helps support lucid dreaming. As you can imagine, I love incorporating spiritual tools into my breathwork practice! Meditation music, like the Solfeggio frequencies, or Tibetan bowl baths enhance your experience, and of course, our gemstone friends can provide excellent support and expansion as you move into altered states. One of my favorite stones to hold during breathwork is morado opal. Morado opal is ideal for working with the Third Eye Chakra and connecting to higher knowledge. It’s believed to bring the energy of the Pleiadians to you while deepening your breathwork practice. If you’re seeking higher knowledge and answers, morado opal is a beautiful companion, allowing you to access personal wisdom and experience connection to Source. Azurite is another great option for visioning and inspiration during breathwork. You don’t have to get fancy with the stones, just hold them in your hand or place them on your belly or forehead. Keep it simple and relaxed.

When your life force is flowing properly, you feel better, look better, have more energy, heal quickly, can be present for others, and get more accomplished in reaching your goals. No matter what you do in life, breathwork can be your ally, bringing peace, serenity, and freedom from the distractions of the mind. It’s truly a life-changing practice!
