Part 10. Why Most People Avoid Real Choice
Real choice is more frightening than pain.
Because pain can be explained by circumstances. Choice cannot.
When a person makes a choice, they no longer have an alibi.
The illusion of choice
Most people are certain they are constantly choosing. In fact, most of the time they are reacting.
They:
- choose from what they have been offered;
- decide at the last moment;
- agree because “that’s how it turned out”;
- act because they “have to.”
This is not choice. It is adaptation.
Adaptation is safe. It allows you to survive without taking responsibility for the direction.
What real choice is
Real choice does not begin with action. It begins with accepting the consequences in advance.
Not afterward. Not “if something happens.” Beforehand.
I choose this – and I accept what comes next.
This is exactly where most people stop.
Why choice causes anxiety
Because choice:
- cuts off other options;
- makes the path one-way;
- removes the illusion of endless possibility.
Until you have chosen, you can be anyone.
After choosing, you become someone specific.
And being specific is a risk.
Mirror
Is there an area of your life where you have spent years “thinking,” but are actually avoiding a choice?
This is not an accusation. It is a diagnostic question.
Why people hide behind “circumstances”
Circumstances are the perfect hiding place.
If something did not work out:
- the market is to blame;
- the timing was wrong;
- the people were wrong;
- the country;
- the age;
- the past.
This reduces the pain. But it takes away your influence.
As long as you explain your life through circumstances, you are not choosing – you are keeping a script running.
Choice is always lonely
This is an uncomfortable truth.
A real choice:
- does not receive applause;
- is not always understood by the people around you;
- often looks strange.
Support comes later. And even then – not always.
That is why most people choose:
- the comfort of explanations;
- collective approval;
- familiar dissatisfaction.
Why choice is impossible without a pause
You cannot make a choice from tension. There is no choice there – only an attempt to save yourself.
Only when tension is not controlling decisions – the subject of the previous chapter – does space appear.
And in that space, a question arises:
“If I take away the fear, what am I actually choosing?”
The subtlest point
A choice does not have to be abrupt. It does not have to be heroic.
Sometimes a choice means:
- not agreeing;
- not explaining;
- not speeding up;
- not continuing.
These are the choices that most often change a trajectory.
Why people postpone choice
Because postponement creates an illusion:
“I haven’t decided yet.”
But time passes anyway. And the absence of a choice is also a choice.
Just an unconscious one.
What this part comes down to
Real choice:
- provides no guarantee;
- promises no ease;
- offers no protection from mistakes.
It offers something else: authorship.
And when a person takes authorship of their life, it stops being a set of reactions and becomes a sequence of decisions.
Not perfect decisions. Their own.
